Things You Should Do

Freelance job is different from traditional jobs in a number of ways. Here you are not doing a job role but a business. You are responsible from conception to completion of the project. In a few cases you will also be responsible for post project activities like technical support and marketing. Therefore it is mandatory to be very cautious.

Clarify the Terms of Contracts

Before signing the contract make it clear in every sense. In addition to the credentials of the two parties and the scope of work there are a few more things you should formalize. There should be an explicit agreement between you and the employer on the time frame of the project. Get the date for completion of different stages written on the contract deed.

The paper should also feature an agreement on the amount and time of payments to be made. Get specific about the revisions or alterations to be made and the compensations that will be offered in return. In short, don’t let anything vague or the employer will dictate at will.

Hire Professionals if Required

Most of the times you will be working alone but the need for the services sometimes becomes inevitable. These personnel can help take care of finances, send out proposals and quotations if the need be so.

Retain Liquidity

If you are a full time freelancer and don’t have any other income stream; take special note of the cash in hand. Every day won’t bring in money and there can be many periods when you don’t get work.

Be Punctual

As a freelancer you should be self driven. There is no one to motivate you or demand work in a routine. Give due time to your job or else the quality will deteriorate. Remain focused while doing work and avoid any distractions.

Go Social

Join different social networking and professional sites. Ask for referrals from the employers you have worked with follow them up with a thank you letter or call.

Things to Avoid

There are certain things which you should avoid in order to do an efficient freelance job.

Not Paying Attention to Health

Always keep an eye on your eating habits and life style. Give time to a walk or other recreational trips. Don’t work in illness as this will aggravate the disease further. Take proper medication and rest. Don’t feel it to be time wastage in seeing a doctor.

Interfering Professional with Personal Life

Agreed freelance job offers you the flexibility to work any where at any time. But it depends on you how you manage the working atmosphere and time. Don’t overlap your recreational time with the work. Agreed you don’t need an office but still keep the work place separate.

Not Seeing the Broader Picture

Sure you don’t need to be distracted from the current job but look out for the future. One day the project is going to finish and then God knows when you will get a new one. Keep bidding on the other suitable projects and keep in touch with the working community as well. Most of the times you will have room to negotiate the working schedule with the future employer.

As a freelancer you need to take care of your job, health, time, family and finances all the time. You can hire professional services for some of the tasks but in the end it is only your work ethics, habits and mentality which define your success or failure.
